Pontiac School Trips, Portes Ouvertes, UPAR and R Farms

"There is always something going on at R & R farms".

Whether we are planting, watering, harvesting, loading the truck for deliveries or serving our customers, every day is a new challenge. We have tied to make R & R Farms a stopping destination for people visiting the Pontiac. In addition to local residents, we have had visitors from across Canada and the United States. There is always something different to see and do on a daily and or seasonal basis.

We have hosted several activities on the farm that have brought large crowds of people and added notoriety to the area.

On September 9th 2007, we hosted the Portes Ouvertes, which is an open house and farm tour day of Quebec farms. This annual agricultural event is put on in conjunction with the UPA, the Quebec agricultural union. Over 400 people visited the farm and were treated to wagon rides, information booths, floral arranging, barn and greenhouse tours, cattle weighing and a live band. Everyone was treated to a hot buffet and barbeque featuring our homegrown food. A veterinarian and local inseminator were also on hand to answer questions.

In October 2007, ninety- six students from a local school, Jean Paul II, plus teachers and chaperones came and spent a full day on the farm. Halloween and pumpkins were the theme for the day. Students enjoyed pumpkin carving and coloring, a treasure hunt, wagon rides, cattle weighing, donkey feeding, face painting and homemade soup was served for lunch made with vegetables from R & R Farms.

During the summer of 2008, R & R Farms participated in the Agricultural Merit Awards along with other farms from throughout the province of Quebec. Having won the bronze medal prior to this, we participated in the next level and won the silver medal. A group of judges chosen from the organization came and viewed the farm. We were scored on production, livestock, gardening, in addition to our sales and knowledge of what we do. This award only comes to the Pontiac every 5 years and there is a set of rules that must be followed in order to compete.

In the fall of 2008, one hundred students from Jean Paul II School returned to spend another fun filled day on the farm. With the help of teachers and parents a full day was planned. Rolling pumpkin races, talking about horses and donkeys with our Ferrier, in addition to a treasure hunt were added to the already popular activities from the year before. Students once again got to enjoy farm life and spent a day learning outside of the classroom.

There have been various other small groups spend some time at R & R Farms, some just to look at the cattle, others to look at the donkeys, while others came to load up on vegetables, flowers and pumpkins in the fall.

In the summer of 2009, we had a garden tour of the greenhouse and flower gardens that was a great success. Keep checking back for more activities and please stop by and bring a friend or two.
